Traveling with children can be both exhilarating and challenging, but when your children are on the autism spectrum, it can add an extra layer of complexity. As a mother of two boys on the autism spectrum, I understand these challenges firsthand. However, I've discovered a powerful tool that has made our travels smoother and opened up a world of wonder for my sons: embracing their special interests.

Traveling the World with Autistic Children: Exploring Special Interests

My oldest son has an insatiable passion for architecture. From ancient wonders to modern marvels, he is captivated by the intricate designs and rich history behind each structure. His fascination led him to dream of seeing iconic landmarks like the Mayan Temples, Tokyo Tower, the Taj Mahal, and the Empire State Building. As a parent, fulfilling these dreams has been both rewarding and enlightening.

It took eight years to make my son's dream of seeing a Mayan Temple a reality, but the joy on his face when he finally stood before those ancient ruins was priceless. Similarly, our trip to Tokyo Tower, a destination he had longed to visit since the age of four, remains a cherished memory. Despite his initial reservations about the walking involved, he pushed through and embraced the experience wholeheartedly. All of this has helped us in traveling the world with my autistic children: Exploring Special Interests

Next on his list are the Taj Mahal, the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, and the National Mall in Washington DC. His curiosity about the stories behind these architectural wonders fuels his desire to explore them further. And I couldn't be more thrilled to accompany him on these journeys, knowing that each trip enriches his understanding and appreciation of the world around him.

In contrast, my youngest son's passion lies in volcanoes. He's fascinated by their power and mystique, often regaling us with facts about different types of volcanoes. While he struggles with the idea of flying, I'm determined to help him overcome his fears, knowing that the world holds countless volcanic wonders waiting to be discovered.

From extinct volcanoes like Capulin Volcano National Monument to the active peaks of Hawaii, my son's enthusiasm for volcanoes inspires me to seek out new adventures. Despite the challenges of traveling with an autistic child, witnessing his excitement as he explores his special interest makes every moment worthwhile.
